What travel documents are required for the United States?
Travel to the United States requires certain travel documents. Whether you’re a tourist, student or professional, here are the documents you need to enter the United States.
Valid passport for the USA
A passport valid for entry into the United States is required for travel on the American continent. Make sure that the :
- Is an electronic passport containing a digital chip.
- It contains at least one blank page for input and output stamps.
- Is valid for the duration of your stay.
ESTA travel authorization or visa
Depending on your country of citizenship and the nature of your trip, you’ll need either a visa or ESTA authorization.
- Tourist Visa B2: Required for tourist stays of over 90 days or for nationals of countries not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program.
- B1 Business Visa: For business trips, meetings, conferences or contract negotiations.
- ESTA authorization: For nationals of countries eligible for the Visa Waiver Program, ESTA authorization is required for stays of up to 90 days. ESTAs are valid for two years, or until your passport expires.
Round-trip air ticket
A round-trip airline ticket is required to obtain a travel authorization for the United States. U.S. immigration authorities want to ensure that visitors do not plan to overstay their authorized stay. Make sure you have your return ticket.
Proof of sufficient financial resources
You must be able to prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in the United States. This may include, for example: recent bank statements, letters of financial sponsorship, proof of regular income or valid credit cards.
Invitation letter or additional documentation
Depending on the reason for your trip, you may need additional documents:
- Business trip: Invitation letter from the American company, conference program, and details of business contacts.
- Tourism: Hotel reservations, travel itineraries, and proof of tour bookings.
- Studies: Form I20 or F1 visa for students, proof of enrolment, and letters of admission.
Documents for minors
If you are travelling with minor children, additional documents are required:
- Birth certificate: To prove relationship with parents or guardians.
- Letter of consent: If only one parent is traveling, a letter of consent from the other parent may be required.
